This program will deepen their understanding in the art of playwriting and will lay the groundwork for working as a playwright in professional theatre. The program is being led by Young Company Stage Manager and Education Director Sarah Miller.
Monday evenings from 6 to 9 pm – September 30 to November 25
For students in Grades 9 to 12
Through multiple creative and thought-provoking writing exercises, a group of 8-10 aspiring playwrights will learn about the different elements of playwriting (character, plot, dialogue, setting, style, stage directions, and subtext), and how all of these elements can be shaped and brought together to create a complete piece written for the stage. The playwrights will also be guided through how to offer constructive dramaturgical feedback to their peers. By the end of the nine-week program, the playwrights will have written a first rough draft of a play, and an excerpt that can be performed in a staged reading in the ninth week.
